UISRM’s mantra is Student focused. Industry centered. While there are many ways the program lives this throughout the school year, the single largest and most public example of it is the UISRM Symposium presented by the Iowa Heartlanders and the Hawkeye Sport Business Association (HSBA).

As faculty advisor of the event’s student planning committee, I see how the event provides them extracurricular learning that builds their industry-ready knowledge, skills, and abilities. At the same time, their efforts provide similar learning to their peers through the accessible professional development opportunity in a familiar environment.

For the 10th annual UISRM Symposium presented by the Iowa Heartlanders and HSBA, club president, Owen Parker (ex. minor 2026) once again provided effective oversight throughout the planning process. Caden Todtz (ex. BS 2027) handled all event logistics, including confirmation and communication with Iowa Memorial Union staff. Sara Bayer (ex. BS 2026), Sam Hennes (ex. BS 2026), and Lily Rennick (ex. BS 2027) tackled event marketing, most notably creating the new event logo. Kylen Boundas (ex. minor 2025) and the HSBA Social Media Special Interest Group created outstanding content to grow awareness for the event on Instagram and LinkedIn. On top of planning the day, it was great to see members of the planning committee finding time to interact with professionals.

On top of this year’s planning team, it is important to note the students before them who built the foundation on which the best UISRM Symposium to date stands. Laura Arens (BS 2020), Jenae Marshall (minor 2022), Ryleigh Collum (BS 2023), Hugo Flores (BS 2023, ex. MA 2025), and Hannah Frazier (BS 2025, ex. MA 2027) all took on the responsibility of delivering the ‘home-field advantage’ to their peers and enhanced their experience portfolios in the process.

In addition to learning about the 10th annual UISRM Symposium presented by the Iowa Heartlanders and HSBA in this edition of the UISRM Newsletter, the program and I hope you enjoy learning about other ways that the program is Student focused. Industry centered. Thanks for reading and being a part of the UISRM community!
