Just like that, we’re back! The return of students, faculty, and staff brings a vibrant energy to campus that serves as a powerful reminder of our shared purpose. A new academic year means new opportunities to learn, connect, and succeed, and our commitment to student success remains at the heart of it all. The beginning of a new semester is always filled with optimism and possibility, and I am excited to see our students grow, achieve, and make the most of the experiences ahead. But before we get too far into the 2026-27 school year, let’s celebrate the accomplishments of our students over the summer months.

Throughout the summer, our students represented the University of Iowa exceptionally well through a wide range of field experiences, internships, and professional engagement opportunities. More than 100 students completed independent field experiences across the country and around the world, while approximately 50 students participated in guided field experiences spanning four states. In addition, many students pursued volunteer and service opportunities on their own initiative, demonstrating their commitment to personal and professional growth.

These experiences provide invaluable opportunities for students to apply classroom knowledge in real-world settings, gain meaningful industry insight, and build professional networks that will support their future careers. We are proud of the initiative, adaptability, and professionalism our students continue to demonstrate as they make a positive impact both within their communities and beyond.

As I reflect on my first full year in my ‘new’ role as the Assistant Director of Field Experience, I am continually impressed by the professionalism, dedication and ambition that our students show. Their drive for success, willingness to embrace challenges, and commitment to professional growth reaffirm why our program continues to be recognized for developing outstanding future leaders in the sports industry.

The success of our students is also a reflection of the commitment shown by our faculty members. What makes our department special is the personal investment faculty make in each student's journey. By understanding individual goals, strengths, and aspirations, our faculty provide guidance and mentorship tailored to each student's unique path, helping students maximize their potential and prepare for long-term success.

I am proud to be part of the Sport and Recreation Management program at the University of Iowa and to work alongside our dedicated students, faculty, staff, alumni, industry partners, and athletics colleagues. As we begin a new academic year, I look forward to seeing all that our students accomplish and am grateful for the collective support that helps prepare the next generation of leaders in the sport and recreation industry. It is an honor to play a small role in their journey.
