The start of each school year brings excitement for students and faculty alike. Reconnection with friends and colleagues, a fresh beginning to an academic year, and a restructured schedule are often key contributors to their enthusiasm. However, the start of the fall 2026 semester at the University of Iowa is bringing a new ingredient to the excitement of UISRM students and faculty: a new home.
The University of Iowa’s newest academic, administrative, clinical, and research building, the Health Sciences Academic Building (HSAB), opened many of its doors on Monday, November 10, 2025. On June 1, 2026, the entire building received approval for occupancy, paving the way for UISRM’s faculty to move into their new offices. Monday, August 24, 2026 marked the start of the first academic year where UISRM students and faculty will gather, learn, and teach in HSAB. Its contribution to this school year’s enthusiasm can’t be overstated.
HSAB is home to a full menu of classroom spaces including five TILE classrooms, two auditoriums, five multipurpose classrooms, a seminar room, and a computer lab. It will also allow all UISRM faculty and staff to join the remainder of the Health, Sport, and Human Physiology Department (HSHP) in the same office suite. Most importantly, HSAB will provide a variety of common spaces. HSAB’s entry atrium, the lounge outside HSHP’s fourth-floor office suite, and the outside courtyard all provide students and faculty the opportunity to comfortably complete work and gather to discuss class and research projects.
Beyond the amenities discussed, UISRM will control two unique spaces. First, its podcasting studio will allow students in Adam Kempenaar’s Podcasting for Sport and Recreation Professionals course and other content creators to produce professional quality audio and video content. Second, the UISRM experiential learning lab provides a flexible and collaborative learning environment tailored to the program’s experiential learning courses such as the UISRM Agency, NASCAR, and San Diego Sports Consulting Practicum guided field experiences.
We hope you enjoy the virtual tour of HSAB led by Ashley Stinocher (BS 2025, ex. MA 2027), Emmanuel Mensah (ex. MA 2027), Lauren Trent (BS 2025, ex. MA 2027), Peter Augustyniak (ex. BS 2027), and Lily Fournier (BS 2025, ex. MA 2027). Check out HSAB in person at the Open House; details and a link to RSVP are below.
