Dear Health, Sport, and Human Physiology (HSHP) Faculty and Staff,

Welcome back from fall break and to the month of December! Yes, December, and week 14 of the fall semester!  Two more weeks to the fall semester and then finals week!  In this month’s DEO newsletter, I will share the latest HSAB updates, information on our ongoing faculty searches that are at the in-person interview stage, upcoming events, faculty achievements, recognitions and publications since my last update on November 2.

Faculty searches and hires

The department has been busy running multiple faculty searches this fall and will continue early into the spring semester. An update on the searches is below: 

  • Visiting Assistant Professor in Nutrition & Health: The search committee, Kathy Mellen, Stephanie Borst & Kelli Taeger, have made an offer to a candidate, they are currently awaiting their reply.
  • Open-Rank Instructional Track faculty search in Sport & Recreation Management: The search committee, Alex Voss (co-chair) Packy Moran (co-chair), Dan Matheson, Jeremy Mims, & Kate Wakenight, have invited 4 candidates to interview on-campus. Scheduling of these interviews is currently taking place and interviews will be wrapped up by December 12.
  • Tenure Track faculty search: Sensorimotor/Health Promotion in HSHP: The scheduling of on-campus interviews for 4 candidates is currently taking place. In-person interviews will wrap up on December 16.
  • Instructor faculty search in HPAS (2 positions): The search committee, Megan Lewey (chair),  Andrea Short & Lauren Tetmeyer, are currently awaiting approval from the provost to offer the 2 chosen candidates the positions.
  • Open-Rank Instructional Track faculty search in Exercise Science and Health: The search committee, Amy Fletcher (chair), Clay Peterson, and Shawn Flanagan, had chosen 3 candidates to interview on campus, but unfortunately, they all pulled out of the search. The search is currently on hold and will likely be renewed in the spring.

Events

  • Ask An Alum

Wednesday, December 3, 2025, 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, Zoom

A new series where we will be hosting graduates from our department in 1-hour Zoom conversations with interested students. The series will give students a chance to talk with alumni in careers they are interested in. We will have sessions on: Advanced Practice Providers (PA vs. MD vs. ARNP), Pre-Dental, Pre-Dietetics and Nutrition, Career Paths, Personal fitness and gym ownership and more!

Our first session, “Ask An Alum: Pre-Physical Therapy,” will be on Dec. 3rd at 2 PM. In this Zoom meeting you will get the chance to meet Troy Bockenstedt, a graduate of the department, owner of Aero Performance and Physical Therapy, and a practicing PT. Troy serves on our alumni advisory board and is joining us to talk about his academic and career path, the world of physical therapy and any other questions you may have! This will be an interactive conversation designed to get at what students want to know about this field and Troy’s experience in it!

  • SRM December Graduation

Friday, December 19, 3:45 PM-5:15 PM, UI Athletics Hall of Fame

UISRM faculty will host a celebration on December 19, 2025, at the Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame to honor graduates of the Sport and Recreation Management program. The event will feature remarks, the distribution of cords for BS graduates, and an opportunity for graduates to celebrate their accomplishments with family and friends.

  • HSHP Return to Campus Spring 2026

Thursday, January 15, 2026, 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM, Big Grove Brewery, Iowa City

We’re planning a special Spring 2026 celebration for all faculty, staff, research associates, and their significant others and families. Watch for your official invitation soon and be sure to RSVP! Your participation will make this milestone event unforgettable! Expect a family-friendly atmosphere with opportunities to reconnect, enjoy refreshments, and celebrate together.

Celebrating achievements and recognitions

Therapeutic Recreation students partner with the City of North Liberty Recreation Department

Students in the Therapeutic Recreation Assessment and Evaluation class worked with the City of North Liberty Recreation Department to plan and administer a questionnaire to gather information about the community's interest and access needed for adaptive and inclusive recreation programs. Then, students helped host a successful Campus to Community event highlighting accessible activities and opportunities for participation at the city's recreation center.

Love from Levi Foundation partners with Iowa student organization

The University of Iowa Child Life Student Association and their faculty advisor, Emily Mozena, collaborated the Love from Levi Foundation to support their efforts in creating books for children in the hospital or with chronic illnesses. The books are then sent to children all over the world to enjoy. The effort allowed them to create 536 book pages for the Foundation!

Navigate the holidays with joy while leaving the guilt outside in the cold

To help navigate the season with more joy and less guilt, Kathy Mellen, a registered dietitian and professor of instruction in the Department of Health, Sport, and Human Physiology at the University of Iowa, shares practical insights on how to enjoy holiday meals, manage social pressures, and feel good — physically and emotionally — during this season of celebration.
