Championships: Planning and Presentation Field Experience Opportunity

This guided field experience course provides students with firsthand exposure to championship-level athletic events. Students will gain practical experience by participating in the planning and execution of high school and collegiate championship competitions, assisting with event operations, programming, activities, and other key functions throughout the duration of the experience.

The main partners for the class will be the Iowa City Sports Commission and the NCAA being involved with NCAA Women's Wrestling Championship and the NCAA Men's Basketball March Madness Sweet 16 and Elite 8.

Students will:

  • Complete foundational studies including, principles of event management, project planning, facility management, hospitality and more;
  • Hear from guest speakers, engage in unforgettable experiences, all while honing their event management skills in a unique environment;
  • Earn 3 semester hours of credit toward their Sport and Recreation management field experience requirement, or they can use this unique experiential learning opportunity to enhance their resume.

Other event opportunities will include the Iowa State Girls Wrestling Championship, B1G Swimming/Diving Conference Championships, NCAA Women's Wrestling Championship, NCAA Div II Wrestling Championship, NCAA Div III Women's Basketball Championship, NCAA March Madness Men's Basketball Regional.

Course outline

Tuesday and Thursday - 11 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., 4013 Health Sciences Academic Building (HSAB)

  • Saturday,  March 6 - Sunday, March 7, 2027 (on-site)  (Coralville, IA)
  • Additional 2027 dates (optional):
    February 4-5, March 12-13, March 17-20, March 26-29. Locations include Iowa City, Cedar Rapids and Kansas City.

Miscellaneous information:

  • 3 semester hours
  • Anticipated course fee: $525
  • Transportation, housing, and some meals included in course fee.
