A message from the DEO

January 2026

Dear Health, Sport, and Human Physiology (HSHP) Faculty and Staff:

Welcome back for the Spring 2026 semester! Before we jump into the 2026 semester, I wanted to briefly pause and reflect on some of the successes and achievements that the department had in 2025.

Our undergraduate degree programs continue to thrive. In the fall of 2025, the total number of undergraduate students enrolled across our six majors (Human Physiology, Exercise Science, Sport & Recreation Management, Health Studies, Health Promotion, Therapeutic Recreation) was 2543. This was a 5.6% increase from 2409 in fall 2024, and an incredible 14.8% increase from 2215 students in fall 2022, when I started as DEO!

In addition to undergraduate programs, the PhD and MS/MA thesis and non-thesis graduate degree programs in HSHP, the MA Sport and Recreation Management, and the MA in Child Life remain consistent with 101 students enrolled in the fall of 2025. In addition, we observed some modest growth in our four minors (Human Physiology, Sport and Recreation Management, Lifestyle Medicine, Inclusive Recreation) to 386, and our two certificate programs (Disabilities Studies, Interscholastic/Athletics Administration) to 126 for fall 2025.

Altogether, when combining undergraduate majors, minors, certificates, and graduate students, the Department of HSHP served 3,063 students in fall 2025!!

While these numbers reflect meaningful growth, they also prompt important questions: Are we providing impactful and positive learning experiences in the classroom, in practicums/experiential learning, and in research labs for our students? Are we preparing our students to achieve their career goals in healthcare, research, the sport and recreation industry, or community/corporate health promotion and wellness settings? Is our faculty’s research and scholarship advancing the health and well-being of Iowans and beyond, contributing to biomedical discovery, and earning recognition for its potential impact at the state, national, and international levels?

I am pleased to share some of the impactful stories from the past year—highlighting our students, faculty, and programs. To see these stories, check out the ‘news’ link on our website: https://hshp.uiowa.edu/news.  Thank you and congratulations to all our faculty and staff for contributing to this success!

Don’t forget to join us this Thurs, Jan 15th,  from 3-6 pm at Big Grove for our HSHP Return to Campus Spring 2026 event!  Now, onward to spring 2026!

HSAB updates

Only 20 short weeks stand between us and the most significant move in our department’s history. A new era of innovation and excellence is about to begin!

This is not just another building; it is the largest and fastest-delivered academic project in University of Iowa history, and it stands as a testament to the extraordinary planning, precision, and professionalism that have defined every step since our first meetings in late 2022. Every detail counts, each decision shapes the future. This is our last winter in the Field House and IBIF so keep those windows closed!
